Symptoms We Regularly Treat
The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) connects your jawbone to your skull. When its biomechanics become altered or overloaded due to physical trauma, stress, or habitual clenching (bruxism), it can cause a wide range of radiating symptoms. We provide targeted clinical management for:
- Jaw
Pain & Tightness: Constant aching around the jaw joint, masseter muscles, and sides of the face. - Clicking, Popping, or Grating: Audible or physical noises when opening your mouth, chewing, or yawning.
- Bruxism (Teeth Grinding & Clenching): Waking up with a stiff, fatigued jaw or sensitive teeth due to nocturnal grinding.
- Tension Headaches & Migraines: Severe headaches tracking up the side of the head, temples, or base of the neck, caused by jaw tension.
- Ear Pain & Tinnitus: Ached feelings or ringing in the ears due to the anatomical proximity of the jaw joint to the ear canal.
- Restricted Movement: Inability to fully open the mouth, or a jaw that shifts unevenly to one side when opening.
Our Multidisciplinary Clinical Approach
| Discipline | How It Alleviates TMJ Dysfunction |
|---|---|
| Osteopathy | Emphasises the functional relationship between the jaw, cervical spine, and thoracic region. By evaluating the body as an interconnected system, osteopaths identify and treat regional biomechanical strains and myofascial tension that contribute to TMJ dysfunction. |
| Chiropractic | Focuses on the biomechanics of the upper cervical spine (the neck), which shares intimate neurological and muscular pathways with the jaw. Restoring proper movement to these neck joints helps normalise nervous system signaling and improves overall jaw function |
| Physiotherapy | Utilises targeted exercise rehabilitation, posture correction protocols, soft tissue mobilisation, and neuromuscular re-education to balance out overactive jaw muscles and strengthen weak stabilisers. |

Yes, where clinically indicated and with your explicit prior consent. Wearing sterile medical gloves, our practitioners may gently release hypertonic muscles (like the lateral and medial pterygoids) from inside the mouth. This is often the most efficient way to relieve deep, long-standing jaw tightness.
Absolutely. Physical therapy works perfectly alongside dental mouthguards or bite splints. While splints protect your teeth from the physical damage of grinding, our therapy treats the underlying neuromuscular tension in the muscles and joints themselves.

Temporary jaw muscle tightness from stress usually clears up in a few days. True TMJ dysfunction involves the joint itself and often requires professional treatment. For a deeper dive into symptoms, triggers, and anatomy, read our detailed guide on understanding the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
