Marek Kolarik

Registered Osteopath and Massage Therapist

Marek is a registered osteopath, sports massage and deep tissue massage therapist who originally grew up in Slovakia. Marek completed his education at the University College of Osteopathy (UCO) in London UK by achieving a Master in Osteopathy (M.Ost). His journey as an osteopath started in his early 30’s, where he realised that his previous career (hospitality) was causing significant lower back pain, which influenced him to reconsider his future on both a professional and personal level. Marek’s motivation was to work in a field where he can continue to develop his skills and knowledge and feel the fulfilment from improving as a person.

“I always wanted to work in an environment where I get to share my experiences with other people, which was something that I enjoyed a lot in my previous career in hospitality. I love helping people and making sure they are living their best lives.”

Marek found osteopathic treatment purely by luck, but instantly he felt that it had something to offer for his back injury at that moment. He had no expectations on how it could improve his pain and reflectively in his lifestyle, but as time progressed he realised the benefits of osteopathy and its biopsychosocial model. Marek’s training not only helped him deal with his pain, it also helped him understand more about himself and how he personally processed pain both mentally and physically. It gave him an opportunity to realise how limitations due to pain were affecting his life, and that there is more to it than just his back injury. Looking retrospectively at that period completing his osteopathic studies was his biggest achievement so far.

“Obviously, it would be unfair not to mention that I had tremendous support from my friends in school and outside, and my family and my tutors. It’s been a great achievement to become an osteopath and a profession that I really love to work in.”

Because of his past experience, Marek likes to communicate with his patients on how they feel, and how they are influenced by their own experiences. This allows patients to reflect on what is restraining them, how osteopathy can help them and how a patient’s environment can determine their optimal health. Therefore, his interest in addition to manual therapy is also Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and exploring how this approach can help with a patient’s experience. Beside the cognitive part in manual therapy, Marek always felt inspired by some older osteopaths that he got to observe in his final year. This is why he would like to continue with developing his manual skills and aims is to explore cranial and visceral osteopathic approach to treatment, by undertaking further training in the UK.

Marek’s approach to work as an osteopath is influenced mainly from his training and his background as a sport massage therapist, applying predominantly structural osteopathy with direct techniques including articulation, MET (muscle energy technique), and neuro dynamics. Marek is a strong believer that the body needs to move and the role of manual therapist is to support patients and encourage them to find their optimal exercise to maintain in good condition.

“My personal view is that I know how getting slowly back to activity or sport after my own experience with low back pain helped me to feel better about myself and my back injury. This gave me confidence to try on new activities, which favoured my circumstances and gave me space to socialise with people from different environments. This is something that patients also go through.”

After gaining his masters, Marek decided to go back to Slovakia where he had a chance to work for five months as an osteopath after taking over from a UK trained osteopath due to her maternity leave. During this period, he had a chance to develop more clinical skills, as well as analysing his future direction as an osteopath. Marek soon realised the importance of collaboration within the osteopathic profession and outside in the wider health and medical community. This collaboration has wider advantages in the forms of better care of patients and improvements in education for therapists. At this point Marek began to understand the value of how health care can support patients better if it works together across the whole medical spectrum in a holistic way.

When Marek is not providing osteopathy he likes to stay active with activities such as running, bouldering or any exercise that he can do with friends. Marek also loves visiting the theatre, cinemas and galleries. He also loves to travel and explore new countries and is also looking forward to continuing exploring London and all it has to offer. Additionally he loves to spend time with friends and family and he likes to spend time with people who have a good sense of humour similar to his.

Marek has attended many CPD lectures and courses during and after his osteopathic studies in order to maintain and develop his knowledge. These include:

  • ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage – London
  • Level 2 Fitness Instructor – Fitness Training Company – London
