How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal is used due to its effective results of delaying hair regrowth for long periods of time. However it does not usually result in permanent hair removal. The reason behind this is due to the hair growth cycle. Initially the laser will affect the hairs that are in their anagen phase of hair regrowth, this is known as the active phase and is when the hair is totally attached to the follicle receiving all the nutrients needed to grow. Treatment during this active period results in the destruction of the hair follicle as well as its nutrient supply.
Each individual hairs growth cycle is unique, this means that in some of the treatments hairs may be in the other phases of hair regrowth, these include the catagen, or latent stage of hair growth. Hairs in these stages of growth will not be harmed by the treatment and will grow back when the treatment is finished. Laser treatment can also cause hair follicles to go dormant rather than kill them.
This is the reason why a course of laser hair removal treatments are needed for the initial stages of the hair removal. Sixe cycles of treatment are required as a minimum. These should occur every four to six weeks. It is also recommended to have maintenance treatments every six to twelve months for the most effective and sustained results.

The Lynton Laser Machine

Lynton is a British company that collaborates with Manchester University to develop the safest laser systems in the market. Lyton have been in business for more than 20 years and have a large number of aesthetic and clinical machines. They work with many well known companies and a number of well-known medical facilities, including the NHS.

There are various types of lasers with varying powers, so deciding which one to use is critical when wanting to achieve satisfying results. A laser’s power needs to be well made in order for it to be effective. When less energy is used, the hair follicle will only be weakened short term, not destroyed. For laser hair removal here at bodytonic clinic we use the INITIA Diode Laser, which uses high-power technology.

With the INITIA Diode Laser, there are two modes in which the laser can work; STANDARD and MOTION. The main difference between the two modes is the fluences used. By fluences we mean the energy delivered to the treated area. MOTION mode uses lower fluences which means it can destroy the vital part of the hair with less discomfort. It can be used on all skin types, great for thicker and darker hair. STANDARD mode delivers high fluences in one shot which means it can reach higher temperatures. This can make treatment uncomfortable but gives optimal results within a few treatments. Great for lighter skin types and fine and lighter hairs.

Firstly you will need to book a patch test and consultation, this will take approximately 30 minutes and includes:

  • A thorough and full medical history as well as a detailed questionnaire about your lifestyle and your skin/hair and sun exposure.
  • Clear information will be given about the treatment, how it works and some aftercare advice.
  • Information about the number of sessions required and pricing will be discussed. It is normally recommended to have 8 sessions. However this is dependent on skin and hair type.

It is important to keep the area that is being treated out of the sun for a period of 2 weeks prior to your treatment. Fake tanning products should not be used 3-4 weeks prior to treatment. If you are in full sun exposure, wait 4 weeks.

What to expect during my first Laser Hair Removal session

The treatment will be performed by one of our certified therapists.

  • The area being treated will be cleansed.
  • If the bikini area is being treated, disposable underwear will be offered.
  • A white pencil will be used to mark out the area being treated. This is to allow for neatness and optimum results.
  • Cold EKG gel will be placed over the area to help the slide of the Laser.
  • Laser safety glasses will be given to you to wear throughout the treatment to ensure your eyes are protected from the laser light exposure.
  • The session will be carried out. The time of the session will be dependent on the area/s being treated and can last anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Finally the skin is cleansed and protected using SPF lotion if required.

Aftercare Advice

After the treatment there may be some heat and redness around the treatment area. It is recommended to wear light and loose fitting clothing so as not to irritate the skin further. Aloe Vera gel or cream can be applied to the area to help with any sensitivity or redness.

Directly after your laser treatment your therapist may use a SPF cream on the skin to help protect the skin. We recommend using a broad spectrum SPF 50 on your skin in between sessions to help protect your skin from any UV damage.

Please refrain from waxing, epilating, plucking or tweezing your hair between treatments. Shaving is the best hair removal method to use as this doesn’t affect the hair follicle.

If you have received facial laser hair removal it is important that you don’t use any cosmetics or make-up on your skin directly after the treatment. This is due to the increased risk of acne development due to open pores from the heat from the laser. It is also recommended to refrain from touching your face, and not to squeeze or pick your skin as this can create long term damage.

While it is highly effective, laser hair removal is also gentle enough to be used even on sensitive areas of the body. Traditionally, the most common areas of the body treated with laser hair removal are:

Lip

Laser hair removal on the lip area is quick and virtually pain free with the Initia Diode Lynton laser machine. It is an extra small area so would normally take about 5-10 mins. We class this area as the upper lip. A Free patch test and consultation is required a week before your first treatment. This will then usually be followed by 8 sessions 6 weeks apart. It is very important when having any type of facial laser treatment that you don’t expose your face to the full sun for 14 days after treatment and before your next session. This can cause pigmentation in the area.

Chin

With the Initia Diode Lynton laser equipment, chin hair removal is quick and painless. This extra small area would generally take 5-10 minutes to complete. We class this as the main round section of the chin and lower lip. A week before treatment, we will do a free patch test and thorough consultation, followed by eight sessions spaced six weeks apart. It is critical to avoid full sun exposure for 14 days after treatment and before your next session with any facial laser. Pigmentation may occur as a result if too much sun is exposed to the face.

Cheeks

The Initia Diode Lynton laser makes laser hair removal on the cheeks rapid and painless. At bodytonic clinic we class the cheeks as an extra small area. It would generally take 5-10 minutes to complete treatment in this area. This includes any hair on the major cheek area or the men’s upper beard line. We will still conduct a free patch test and consultation one week before treatment, followed by eight sessions spaced six weeks apart. It is critical that you do not expose your face to the full sun for 14 days after treatment and before your next session with any facial laser. This can lead to pigmentation in the affected area.

Neck

At bodytonic clinic we class the neck as a small area, this includes hair under the chin or around the sides, this normally takes up to 15 minutes. For men this will be a tidy up of the whole neck area along the beard line to collarbone. As this is a very sensitive area we use the cooling tip of the Initia Diode laser machine to soothe the area before and after treatment. The hairline is a sensitive location, because of this we make sure to use the cooling tip of the Initia laser to cool the area before and after treatment. The Lynton Inita laser machine is very fast, we set aside 30 minutes for this medium-sized area. To guarantee the area is protected and the machine has a smooth glide, we add a cooling laser gel over the leg, where we have mapped out 10 cm x10 cm cubes. In our free 30-minute consultation one week before your first session, your practitioner will present you with all the information you require regarding laser hair removal. The hands and fingers will be included in the full arm and it will go up to the shoulder socket. A week before the first treatment, we will conduct a comprehensive consultation and recommend 8 sessions for the best outcomes. Half Arm (includes hands and fingers)

Half arm area includes either the lower or upper half of the arm. At bodytonic clinic we find that the lower half arm is more popular as it includes the hands and fingers. We will carry out a full consultation a week prior to the first treatment and recommend 8 sessions to get the best results. As this area can get sun exposure often your practitioner will ask every session about your time in the sun. This area should not be exposed to full sun 4 weeks prior to your appointment.

Underarms

This area is the armpit, it is classified as an extra small area at bodytonic and will take about 15 minutes to laser. We recommend the standard mode on the Lynton Inita machine for the best results. A full consultation will be done by your practitioner in the free laser consultation. They will advise the best course and type of treatment for each client, tailored to your skin type and hair colour. We use a cooling gel on the area before to ensure the best comfort levels are acquired for this delicate area. Underarm laser hair removal can normally be done all year around due to rarely being exposed to the sun.

Nipples/Areola

Hair growth on the nipple is very common. Excess hair growth in the area can sometimes be caused by over plucking or waxing, this can trigger hair growth. Before laser hair removal, the area, like all other places, will need to be shaved roughly 24 hours before. If you are unable to complete this on your own, we will need to extend this appointment beyond the regular 45 minutes.

Back

Laser Hair removal or thinning for men’s back hair is becoming increasingly popular and we offer this at bodytonic. We can do just the back which we class as a medium area, this will be the main part or certain sections of the back that the client would like the hair reduction to occur. The exact areas will be agreed in the free consultation and patch test , they then will be marked in even parts on the day of your first treatment which will be a week after the initial consultation. The area will need to be shaved as will all areas before laser hair removal, about 24hrs before. If you are unable to do this yourself we will need to add more treatment time to this appointment, normally it would take 30 mins.

Full Chest including Neck

Laser hair removal for males is available at Bodytonic clinic.The entire chest, including the shoulders and neck up to the beard line, is classified as a large area. Following the complimentary consultation and patch test, the exact sections will be indicated with a white pencil to ensure that everything is removed precisely as the client would like. The area, like all other places, must be shaved at least 24 hours before laser hair removal. This region will take 45 minutes to complete and will require eight sessions to achieve optimal results.

Chest/ Stomach

The chest is classed as a medium sized area at bodytonic. This could mean treating half of the chest or smaller patches. Following the complimentary in-depth consultation and patch test, the specific parts will be marked with a white pencil to guarantee that everything is removed exactly as the client wishes. Before laser hair removal, the area, like any other, must be shaved 24 hour prior. This area will take 30 minutes to complete, and it will take around eight sessions to receive the best results.

Bikini

Intimate female laser hair removal is offered at Bodytonic. Standard bikini line is classified as a small area and includes the hair on both sides and the top thin strip of your bikini. The area must be shaved at least 24 hours before laser hair removal treatment. This area will take 15 minute to be completed and 8 sessions, 6 weeks apart are required. The Inita Diode laser machine has a cooling tip to make sure that the sensitive area can be treated with minimal discomfort.

Thong

The thong area also described as an extended bikini or g-string region is classed as a medium area at bodytonic. This includes the hair on both sides of your thong line, as well as the hair on the under area close to the bottom and the top strip. The Inita diode laser is used to ensure the client’s comfort, it contains a cooling tip and two modes which gives the practitioner the ability to tailor the treatment options for this sensitive area. All the hair of the bikini region will be removed as well as the bottom. At bodytonic, this is a large area. Prior to laser hair removal, the region must be shaved 24 hours. We will need 30 – 45 minutes per appointment, 8 sessions 6 weeks apart will be required.

Buttocks

The buttocks or bottom area is classed as a small area. This area is also included in a full hollywood or brazilian treatment. We will need 15 mins to complete this area on its own. As with all areas you will need 8 sessions 6 weeks apart. The area needs to be shaved the day before. Your practitioner will discuss the exact treatment areas in your free consultation a week before treatment.

Perianal 

The perianal area, classified as a small area, is the region around the anus. This area is included with a full Hollywood or Brazilian laser hair removal. The area needs to be shaved before being treated. It can take up to 15 minutes to complete the treatment when completed on its own. The usual recommendation is 8 sessions, 6 weeks apart. A patch test is required at least a week before the treatment. The perianal area is a sensitive area, however, with the Initia Diode laser’s iced tip this enables the practitioner to cool down the area as much as is needed to make for a more comfortable treatment.

Eyebrows and eyelids cannot be done!

The eyelids and eyebrows are the only parts of the body that should not be laser-treated to eliminate unwanted hair. The reason for this is that the laser has the potential to cause eye injury. In fact, simply to be safe, you will be offered eye protection for your hair removal treatments on any other body part. We do not offer laser hair removal at bodytonic on these delicate eye areas.

FAQ’s

Laser hair removal works by using a laser machine. The device emits light, which is then transformed into heat energy. The heat energy produced damages the hair follicle, which then helps reduce hair regrowth.

Only a few treatments are required to notice results. For optimal outcomes, a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 treatments are recommended. However this is dependent on hair and skin type.

For grey or white hair unfortunately treatment is not possible. This is due to the lack of pigment in grey or white hair.

Yes, we can treat almost every part of the body except the brows. This is because they are too close to the eyes. We are also unable to treat the bottom area. Tattooed areas on the skin are also areas that cannot be treated by laser. Laser hair removal is attracted to the pigment within your hair follicle, deep in the layers of the skin. When laser hair removal is performed over a tattoo, the laser cannot distinguish between the pigment in your hair follicle or the pigment in the ink – and can cause the pigment of your tattoo to scatter, potentially leading to burns, blisters or skin damage. In some instances, it can also reduce the colour in the tattoo.

Laser Hair Removal is a treatment that is completed in a short period of time. The time it takes to treat a certain region is determined by its size. This can take anywhere from 5 minutes for the upper lip to 35 minutes for the full legs.

Although there are few contraindications, we will review your medical history during the in depth consultation. Photosensitizing medications, pregnancy, and breast-feeding are the most prevalent therapeutic obstacles to laser hair removal.

Before treatment you should refrain from sunbathing and use self-tanners.
We recommend no sun exposure for 4-6 weeks prior to your appointments.
We advise you to arrive at your first appointment (patch test) with the treatment area cleaned and not shaved, without makeup, product or deodorant.
For your second appointment the treated area needs to be shaved within 24h before having the session.

For at least 24 hours following the treatment, we always recommend avoiding activities that cause excessive heat.
Exercise, hot baths, showers, or saunas are not recommended 24 hours after treatment since they might trap heat and bacteria in the hair follicles, causing irritation.
Following your hair removal treatment, we also recommend wearing loose, light clothing.
