Bio continued

Prior to joining the team at Bodytonic Clinics, Kathleen honed her skills as a private MSK physiotherapist in Central London. This period allowed her to translate the knowledge acquired in university into practical expertise, fostering confidence as a practitioner. She tackled a diverse array of conditions, including overuse injuries, neck and back pathologies, spinal conditions, sports-related injuries, postural dysfunctions, and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Her treatment includes various forms of manual therapy such as massage therapy, trigger point therapy, traction, muscle energy techniques (METs), and joint mobilisations. These hands-on treatments are skillfully paired with carefully tailored exercise programs.

Kathleen has also enjoyed exploring other fields of physiotherapy throughout her student placements, including a role as a student physiotherapist in a hyper-acute neurological rehabilitation unit. Here she treated patients with complex neurological conditions as a result of brain injuries including stroke, traumatic brain injuries, and even nitrous oxide poisoning. She has also previously worked in a surgical unit assisting patients in regaining post-surgery mobility while prioritising their safety for discharge from the hospital. Her responsibilities extended to teaching respiratory exercises to minimise the risk of chest infections. Additional student placements comprised a frailty unit for elderly care, where she provided care for geriatric and COVID-19 patients, community physiotherapy, and an MSK out-patients setting, the latter being an area that she particularly enjoyed. This varied experience underscores Kathleen’s dedication to addressing the nuanced needs of patients across different physiotherapy settings, marking her as a well-rounded and adaptable practitioner.

Before embarking on her university journey, Kathleen took a gap year to study Kinesiology in Massachusetts, USA, delving into the physiological, anatomical, biomechanical, and neurological mechanisms of human movement. During this time, she volunteered as an assistant instructor for a strength and balance class for high-risk falls patients, demonstrating exercises and focusing on technique to strengthen lower extremities and boost self-confidence to decrease the risk of falls. Additionally, she seized the opportunity to shadow physiotherapists during their clinical hours, further enriching her knowledge and practical insights.
Kathleen adopts a comprehensive treatment approach, beginning with a thorough consultation to grasp the patient’s current condition and daily lifestyle. She collaborates with the patient to establish treatment goals based on their priorities. Her method then usually involves the integration of suitable manual therapy techniques for immediate relief, followed by the development of a personalised rehabilitation program involving exercises and stretches tailored to align with the patient’s unique needs and lifestyle. She also ensures to make time for patient education and encourages her patients to ask as many questions as they like in order for them to gain a comprehensive understanding of their condition and how treatment will benefit them.

Kathleen has always had a keen interest in the human body and recognises how physical well-being hugely impacts one’s quality of life, which led her to pursue a career in physiotherapy. Her extensive experience spans diverse age groups and demographics, allowing her to excel in interactions with individuals from various backgrounds. She particularly enjoys working with elderly patients, where she sees opportunity to not only provide physical support, but also to empower older individuals by assuring them that a high quality of life is achievable, even in later stages of life, through pain management and promoting independence. Outside of her primary work as a physiotherapist, Kathleen extends her commitment to care as a part-time in a nursing home. Her clinical background provides a unique perspective as a carer, and she invests time in fostering meaningful connections with the residents by engaging in heartfelt conversations and participating in enjoyable activities together.

Outside her professional commitments, you can find Kathleen out and about in London at different restaurants, vintage shops, art exhibitions, music events, or a park or cafe with a good book. She also loves to travel and experience different cultures.
Kathleen is excited to join the esteemed team at Bodytonic Clinics and looks forward to building strong therapeutic relationships with her patients through the transformative treatments she offers. Her future aspirations align with a continued trajectory as an MSK physiotherapist, driven by a desire to gain more skills and expertise through her ongoing experiences. Kathleen’s journey in physiotherapy is not just a profession but a personal mission to enhance the well-being of those under her care.
